Music from a Jade Flute: The ci poems of Li Qingzhao - Clifford L Pannam
Li Qingzhao is by far the most famous Chinese female poet of the past thousand years. After her husband started his official career, he was often absent; this inspired some of the beautiful love poems that she wrote. Both she and her husband collected many books. They shared a love of poetry and often wrote poems for each other. They also wrote about bronze artefacts of the Shang and Zhou dynasties. Li Qingzhao’s poems are studied in all Chinese schools and universities. Books of her poems are widely sold in China in both Chinese and English. The currently available books of English translations of her poetry are poor; for the first time here is a detailed an erudite work sensitively exploring the meaning and significance of her poems. This beautifully presented book also includes a new and accessible short biography of her life and account of her times. The author is a senior Melbourne barrister of paternal Greek origin who has a deep and continuing interest in China and its language; and the classical history of both of these countries. The essays, commentaries and poems (in translation) in this book reflect the variety of his interests. Now available.
