Format Festival's Academy of Words: Be There Or Be Rhombus [08.02.2011]
Format’s Academy of Words: Sunday, February 27
15 Peel Street (just off Hindley St), Adelaide.
A one day shitfight about the things we want to see start to happen in the publishing industry.
Directed by Ryan Paine, ignorant blogger, book editor, ratbag
All of the day’s events are focused on the idea that the publishing industry is changing pace and young people are at the coalface. There is a lot of dissent being whispered to friends and friends of friends, but not so much in the way of practical ideas about how to guide these rapids of change in the direction of a more democratic, representative, diverse and accessible market for writing, reading and the dissemination of ideas.
People will argue. People will cry and laugh. There will be no book signings.
A selection of panels/workshops/roundtables/events from the program:
How to Sell Out Without Losing Your Cred, with Lisa Dempster
Self explanatory
Trans Anatomy Thesis – To Spit Or Swallow? with Teri Louise Kelly and Jenny Toune Bring your raincoat!
Will Write for Food, with Greg Foyster
About how “the remuneration models of the publishing and media industries are all fucked up”, and whether this “represents a kind of market failure?”
Activism Smells, with Ryan Paine
A panel about being active on behalf of literature.
A Novelty – A literary treasure hunt
Replace “eggs” with “literary tidbits” and you know about as much about this
intriguing event as we do.
Ryan Paine is available for interview immediately, but may arrive sweaty as he travels mostly by bike these days
